Our Research

Networked Systems Group

We look at a wide variety of problems in networked systems, varying in layer (from low-level OS design to high-level architecture), context (from datacenters to WANs to Satellites), methodology (from theory to design to measurement), and approach (from clean-slate designs to incrementally adoptable ones).

Networked Systems

Almost all computational infrastructures used to deliver services involve networked systems, and our research agenda spans a wide range of layers, contexts, methodologies, and approaches. We are particularly fond of overturning conventional wisdom. This group at ICSI is a close collaborative partner of the Networked Systems Lab (NetSys) at UC Berkeley, and we make no distinction between the efforts of the two groups.

Our research has examined:

  • Internet architectures
  • Large-scale distributed systems
  • Data center designs
  • Cellular telephony
  • Performance verification tools
