Most people who are citizens of a foreign country require a visa in order to enter the United States. The specific type of visa required depends on where you are coming from and how long you plan to stay, among other factors.
Visitors to ICSI typically require either a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa or a B-1 or B-2 Visitor Visa:
- The J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa is the most common type of visa required for a longer research stay. If you obtain a J-1 visa, your spouse or dependents may accompany you on a J-2 visa.
- If you are coming for a shorter visit, you may be eligible for a Visitor Visa (B-1 or B-2) or the Visa Waiver Program.

Things to Know about the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa
The process can be long, so know the steps ahead of time and allow 2-6 months for processing.
Here are some of the key steps:
- First, review all the requirements for obtaining an exchange visitor visa.
- Contact ICSI for a DS-2019 form to sponsor your visa.
- Complete the DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application.
- Schedule an embassy appointment. Review visa appointment wait times to know what to expect.
