Biography

Haralampos (Harry) Gavriilidis, PhD, is a Visiting Postdoctoral Researcher at ICSI, working with Dr. Scott Shenker on fine-grained access control and policy enforcement for data systems that span multiple processing engines, administrative domains, and cloud environments.

He completed his PhD in Computer Science at Technische Universität Berlin / BIFOLD, the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data, under the supervision of Volker Markl. His dissertation, “Query Processing and Interoperability Mechanisms for Federated Data Systems,” explored how autonomous and heterogeneous data systems can cooperate efficiently.

More broadly, his research focuses on data systems for analytics across heterogeneous and decentralized environments. His work includes federated query processing, cross-platform execution, interoperability, efficient data transfer, and composable data systems. He has also worked on optimizing data science pipelines and IoT data management. During his doctoral work, he developed systems such as XDB for decentralized federated query processing across geo-distributed databases, XDBC for adaptive data transfer across heterogeneous systems and hardware environments, and SheetReader for efficient spreadsheet parsing.

Before his PhD, Dr. Gavriilides received his MSc and BSc in Computer Science from Technische Universität Berlin. He also worked as a research assistant at Technische Universität Berlin and at DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, contributing to compiler infrastructure and query interfaces for data analytics systems. Earlier, he worked as a full-stack web developer building custom content management systems and web applications.
