Biography

Massimo Maresca, PhD, is Senior Fellow at ICSI and a Professor in the University of Genoa School of Engineering. He is also Founder and Scientific Advisor of DocSpace, a spin-off company developing and marketing the SpreadSheetSpace technology. SpreadSheetSpace—which transforms traditional spreadsheets into a distributed, real-time computational platform—was developed at the Research Center on Computer Platform Engineering (CIPI), a joint project of the Universities of Genoa and Padua that Dr. Maresca helped create.

Dr. Maresca’s research activity has evolved from massively parallel computers to distributed systems and currently focuses on distributed computer platforms and service computing. He has held academic and leadership roles at the University of Genoa and the University of Padua, including serving as a professor, research center director, and graduate school director. He was also a Science & Technology Attaché at the Italian Consulate of San Francisco. He has been the principal investigator for many research projects funded by private companies, the Italian Government, and the European Commission, and has published around 100 papers in scientific conferences and journals.

Dr. Maresca received a Laurea degree in Electrical Engineering and a research doctorate in Computer Engineering, both from the University of Genoa, Italy. He served as a postdoctoral fellow at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, and has also held visiting scholar positions at the University of Washington and ICSI.
