Biography

Brad Karp, PhD, is a member of the ICSI Board of Trustees. He is a Professor of Computer Systems and Networks as well as Head of the Systems and Networks Research Group in the Department of Computer Science at University College London.

Dr. Karp’s research interests encompass computer system and network security, large-scale distributed systems, and wireless networks. In security, his current focus is on the COWL system for web browser and JavaScript security; past projects include work on Wedge secure OS extensions and the Autograph and Polygraph worm signature generation systems. For distributed systems, he is currently developing LDR, a traffic engineering system for ISPs that minimizes delay and avoids congestion, following earlier work on the Open DHT shared public DHT service. In wireless networks, he is working to improve capacity at the MAC and PHY layers and prior contributions include the GPSR and CLDP scalable geographic routing protocols.

Prior to his post at University College London, Dr. Karp held joint appointments at Intel Research and Carnegie Mellon. He was also previously a researcher at ICSI, working on topics including scalable distributed storage for sensor networks, reordering-robust window-based congestion control, and traffic engineering for multi-hop wireless networks. Dr. Karp holds a BS from Yale University, an SM from Harvard University, and a PhD from Harvard University, all in computer science.
