Biography

Jessica Newman serves as Research Mentor at ICSI. She is also a Research Fellow at the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity at UC Berkeley, Director of the AI Security Initiative at UC Berkeley, and Founder and Co-Director of the UC Berkeley AI Policy Hub. Through these activities, Newman leads partnerships with the public and private sector, supports graduate student researchers, facilitates events, and publishes and speaks widely on AI governance and policy. 

Newman’s research focuses on the governance, policy, and politics of AI, with particular attention on comparative analysis of national AI strategies and policies, and on mechanisms for the evaluation and accountability of organizational development and deployment of AI systems. She has published more than 100 papers and articles on the societal implications of AI and emerging technologies in outlets including Brookings TechStream, The Los Angeles Times, and The Georgetown Journal of International Affairs. She serves on several international AI governance and standards bodies including the OECD Expert Group on AI Risk & Accountability and the IEEE Working Group on Recommended Practice for Organizational Governance of Artificial Intelligence.

Previously, Newman was a research advisor with The Future Society, an AI policy specialist for the Future of Life Institute, and a research affiliate at the Institute for the Future. She received her master’s degree in public policy from Harvard Kennedy School and her BA in anthropology from UC Berkeley.
