Our vision for collaborative computing and data sciences
ICSI was founded on the premise that the most complex research challenges require international collaboration. Today, we continue to fulfill that vision by creating a space where researchers from all over the world and at all career stages come together to solve hard problems in computing and data sciences and change the world.
Our thriving network of bold thinkers
Our work spans boundaries and borders. Recognizing that many perspectives produce the best ideas, we welcome researchers from across the globe. Since 1988, we’ve hosted more than 600 visiting postdocs as well as senior scientists, serving as a catalyst for international talent exchange and long-term global collaboration. With a strong interdisciplinary ethos, we cultivate intellectual curiosity and collaboration across fields, sectors, and continents.
Our relationship with UC Berkeley
ICSI is an independent 501(c)(3) research institute as well as an Affiliated Institute of the University of California at Berkeley. With our unique position near the UC Berkeley campus but separate from its administrative structures, our researchers and visitors enjoy ready access to campus collaborators and visitor resources while remaining free from teaching and committee obligations. Some ICSI researchers hold dual appointments with UC Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, tech companies, and/or with other universities and organizations.
