Empowering technologies to protect adolescents from online risks
The “Safety by Design: Protecting Adolescents from Online Risks” research initiative reimagines how to protect teens online by shifting away from a focus on restrictive parental controls and toward empowering, developmentally-informed technologies. Central to the initiative is Teenovate, an innovative co-design program where adolescents partner directly with researchers to shape the tools that will safeguard them.
Drawing from psychology, human-centered design, and computer science, the project develops interactive technologies that teach young people how to recognize, manage, and recover from online risks. These tools focus on maintaining autonomy and trust while fostering digital resilience.
Through real-world prototypes and open-access design patterns, Safety by Design works to create safer, more supportive digital environments—raising a generation of confident, connected, and empowered young people.
