Biography

Vadim Shapiro, PhD, is a Senior Fellow and Research Mentor at ICSI and Founder and CTO at Intact Solutions, Inc.

Dr. Shapiro works at the crossroads of computer science and mechanical engineering, with a focus on computational design and manufacturing. His work is in the areas of geometric and topological computing; digital design and manufacturing; and physical modeling, analysis, and simulation. 

Before coming to ICSI, Dr. Shapiro was Bernard A. and Frances M. Weideman Chair in Mechanical Engineering and Professor of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he directed the Spatial Automation Laboratory. Prior to his academic career he was on the research staff at the General Motors R&D Center. 

Dr. Shapiro is a Fellow of ASME and his technical contributions have been recognized by a number of awards, including NSF CAREER and INSPIRE awards, 2014 ASME Design Automation Award, and the 2015 Pierre Bézier Award. He holds PhD and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from Cornell University, an MS degree in computer science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science from New York University.
