Raymond Perrault

Biography

Ray Perrault, PhD, is a member of the ICSI Board of Trustees. He is a Distinguished Computer Scientist at SRI International’s Artificial Intelligence Center (AIC), which he directed from 1987 to 2017. The AIC conducts contract research for government and commercial sponsors, fostering technology spinoffs and licensing innovations.

Dr. Perrault previously served as Co-Principal Investigator of the CALO Project, a large, multi-institutional, DARPA-funded project whose objective was to build an intelligent office assistant that learns through interaction with its user and the world. Several technologies developed on that project, such as the Siri virtual assistant, have transitioned to commercial and military applications. 

Before coming to SRI in 1983, Dr. Perrault was a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto. He collaborated with students there to pioneer the application of planning, plan recognition, and speech act theory to challenges in natural language discourse. Dr. Perrault earned a BSc with First Class Honors in Mathematics from McGill University and a PhD in Computer and Communications Sciences from the University of Michigan.
