Paul Schmitt

Biography

Paul Schmitt, PhD, is a Research Affiliate at ICSI, Assistant Professor in the Computer Science and Software Engineering Department at Cal Poly, and Co-Founder and CEO at INVISV.

Dr. Schmitt’s research interests include two threads: 1) improving the Internet by creating networked systems to enhance security and privacy; and 2) exploring emerging machine learning techniques to measure, monitor, and protect networks through data-driven insights. In his work, he aims to make the Internet better by designing and building networked systems that improve privacy, enhance performance, and provide insight into networks. His research is rooted in expertise in protocols and architectures that are used at massive scales and underpin modern connectivity. To create immediate impact, he seeks to create “dirty-slate” solutions that explore fundamental principles while being rapidly deployable in operational networks.

Previously, Dr. Schmitt was Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa; before that, he held positions at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute and the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University. He earned his PhD in computer science from UC Santa Barbara.
