Maryam Vareth

Biography

Maryam Vareth, PhD, serves as a Research Mentor at ICSI. She is the Chief Health Technology Officer at the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) and Managing Director of Agile Metabolic Health at UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society. 

Dr. Vareth’s work focuses at the intersection of engineering, data science, and healthcare to drive meaningful advancements in health technology and enhance patient care outcomes. Before her current role, Dr. Vareth was the Research Lead in Health & Life Sciences at BIDS, where she also served as Co-Director and Principal Investigator on several key projects. She has also previously held roles in both academia and industry, including positions at National Semiconductor, IMEC, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the Space Sciences Lab, as well as an Associate Researcher at UCSF’s Surbeck Laboratory of Advanced Imaging. 

Throughout her career, Dr. Vareth has held progressive leadership roles, leading multidisciplinary research teams in developing methodologies and tools aimed at clinical translation, emphasizing the full lifecycle of AI from conceptualization to implementation, thus advancing precision medicine and interdisciplinary health research. She received her BS and MS training in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley and her PhD in Bioengineering through a joint program between UC Berkeley and UCSF.
