Biography

Bjoern Hartmann, PhD, serves as Research Mentor at ICSI. He is also an Associate Professor and Paul and Judy Gray Alumni Presidential Chair in Engineering Excellence in the Division of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley and an Affiliated Faculty Member in the Berkeley Institute of Design.

Dr. Hartmann’s research in human-computer interaction focuses on creating and evaluating user interface design tools, end-user programming environments, and human-AI collaborative systems. He is broadly interested in tools to support human ingenuity across a number of domains including design, programming, and engineering. He is also interested in embodied cognition, especially in augmented and virtual reality. Methodologically, he focuses predominantly on systems research—contributing complex, working interactive systems that embody research ideas and enable specific hypotheses to be tested—but his group also conducts controlled experiments.

Previously, Dr. Hartmann was faculty director of the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation, co-founder of the CITRIS Invention Lab, and a member of the Swarm Lab at UC Berkeley. He has been elected to the SIGCHI Academy and has received a Sloan Research Fellowship, and an NSF CAREER Award, among other awards. He earned his PhD degree in Computer Science from Stanford University and also holds a BA in Communication, a BSE in Digital Media Design, and an MSE in Computer and Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania.
