Biography

Alexei (Alyosha) Efros, PhD, serves as a Research Mentor at ICSI. He has been a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley since 2013, where he is part of the Berkeley Artificial Intelligence Research Lab (BAIR). 

Dr. Efros’ research focuses on computer vision and computer graphics, especially at the intersection of the two. Recently, his lab has been at the forefront of reviving self-supervised learning. He is particularly interested in using data-driven techniques to tackle problems where large quantities of unlabeled visual data are readily available. Other interests include human vision, visual data mining, robotics, and the applications of computer vision to the visual arts and the humanities. 

Before coming to UC Berkeley, Dr. Efros was on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University for a decade, and has also been affiliated with École Normale Supérieure/INRIA and University of Oxford. He has received numerous honors including the ACM Prize in Computing (2016), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2008), and prizes for excellence in computer science teaching. His work has also been featured in the New Yorker, Quanta Magazine, and other media outlets. Dr. Efros received his PhD in 2003 from UC Berkeley.
