Abstract: This talk will explore Europe’s efforts to develop Digital Twins of the Ocean (EU DTO) through a network of research initiatives and public infrastructure projects—most notably EDITO, which builds upon data and models from Copernicus Marine Services and EMODnet. These efforts are further linked to Destination Earth, the European initiative to simulate and monitor the planet through high-fidelity models. Dr. Berre will provide an overview of key initiatives including ILIAD, DTO-BioFlow, SEADITO, AquaINFRA, CLIMAREST, and their synergies with global efforts such as the UN Ocean DITTO Programme. The presentation will highlight how these projects integrate biodiversity, socio-ecological, and climate data to support sustainable ocean governance and international collaboration.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Arne Jørgen Berre is a Chief Scientist at SINTEF Digital in Oslo. With a background in cognitive digital twins and interoperable data spaces for manufacturing and environmental systems, he contributes to major European Green Deal and Ocean Mission projects including ILIAD, DTO-BioFlow, SEADITO, AquaINFRA, CLIMAREST, and BioClima. He actively participates in international standardization efforts through ISO SC42 (AI), ISO SC41 (IoT & Digital Twins), ISO/TC211, OGC, and the Digital Twin Consortium.
